There are SO many kebab shops in London. Whilst waiting for a Guiness to settle recently in a Green Lanes pub, the bartender explained that there were 26 between where we were drinking and the train station. A distance of around 200 meters I surmised incredulously.
So what makes a good one? Normally one that's close, open and not too crowded I guess. Well the City Kebab House in Stoke Newington fullfills these three criteria splendidly, and I readily admit that at least three of its awarded stars are for ticking these very important boxes.
One and a half more stars are given for the size and quality of the food.
Of course unless you are really drunk, there is no point it being huge, if it tastes awful. The kebabs here (and felafal, fish and chips burgers etc) are well cooked, with fresh salads and accompanied with tasty, without being over spicey, sauces.
The quanities too are really generous, with the large shish kebabs being a little on the rediculous side. (Read - sufficient for a hungry man and a smallish girlfried - or the other way around of course)
The final half star is for that certain thing that we all want. The well managed personal relationship with the kebab guys.(Yes they are all guys) You want them to know who you are, maybe know your regular order and preferences. But after turning up a few times in the early hours, armed only with the word kebab, and swaying earily in your end of night contemplative state; you are able to return the following week without a comment.
It is the Kebab shop workers that see us at our worst and it is for a superb discretionary relationship that I give City Kebab House it's final half star. -

I used to go to these place a lot but their quality has gone down. I guess is ok if you´re drunk and is the only kebab open in the area and your cravings for a durum are really strong.

I'm very fond this place.
Open until early hours of the morning,
the food is consistently excellent.
You don't think of a kebab being an art form until you realise how excellently these guys do there job. I like to judge an establishment like this on whether it still tastes good sober.. and, well, this place passes that test with flying colours. :) -

They don't seem that bothered about customers. I walked in and all the staff were too busy watching television. After 30 seconds of standing there I jiggled my change to ensure they knew I was waiting. Nothing. So I walked out. As I was just out of the door the man came and shouted, "What's wrong with you?" I replied, "You obviously don't want my money so I'll spend it somewhere else?" A second man then threatened to hit me with a broom for being "rude".

In an area dominated by kebab houses, it can be a little bit overwhelming knowing how to choose between. City though is something of an institution. Great value, Great Service, Great Opening Hours (I remember getting a kebab from there last new years eve at about 4.30am). Superb Place.
